Life in a City

image

City life is full of advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of advantages of living in a city. The people who live in cities enjoy some special facilities and comforts unlike the village people. Their houses are modern, streets are well-lighted. They can go shopping and buy everything they need. In case of sickness they can avail the treatment of best doctors. Moreover, they can receive education in schools, colleges and universities of high standard. They can also visit libraries, parks, museums and so on to stimulate their minds. But city life has some drawbacks too. The fast life, the foul and smoky weather and dirty atmosphere cause health problem. Last but not the least city life is more or less artificial and monotonous. It has no touch with nature whatsoever.

Essay on An Indian farmer

image

Agriculture is as much important, if not more, as the industry in a country.

Thus here lies the importance of our farmer. An Indian fanner is the backbone of the society. His importance in the economy of the country cannot be over-emphasized. He grows vegetables and fruits for our food and cotton for our clothes.

The Indian farmer is a hard working man. He works from morning till evening in the scorching heat and biting cold. Early in the morning he drives his oxen to the fields. He ploughs the fields, sows seeds and waters the plants He looks after the crops and saves them from being spoiled by stray cattle or wild animals. He enjoys no holiday. At noon he takes his meals under a shady tree and then takes little rest. In the evening he returns home, tired and exhausted.

But he leads a simple life. He lives in a mud house, eats simple food and wears coarse clothes. Generally he is illiterate. We believe in old customs and superstitions. His cattle are his most valuable property. Often during drought crops fail and he is in trouble when the crop ripens, he feels happy. He reaps it, thrashes it and takes the corn to the market. In times of a bad harvest he has little money to buy seeds and manure and runs into debt.

The farmer is fond of festivities. He spends lavishly on marriages and other social ceremony. Recently, the use of agricultural machinery and chemical manures and the provision of credit facilities by cooperative societies and rural banks has improved his living and changed his outlook on life.

Short Essay on Smoking

image

Smoking has become very common and fashionable, especially among young boys. This habit usually begins at school when boys try to experiment with every new thing that they can lay their hands on.

Despite the warnings given by doctors about the ill-effects of smoking, people continue to smoke. Smokers are addicted to it, and even if they want to, they cannot refrain from picking up a cigar or cigarette and puffing away. Some youngsters smoke for the sake of society and some feel that would make them appear liberated and broadminded.

In the beginning, a teenager may take a few puffs from his friend's cigarette; then comes a time when it becomes an indispensable part of his life. Several puffs lead to the formation of a habit. Soon smoking begins to affect the health of the smoker. He becomes a chain-smoker. This smoke is toxic and the nicotine in the cigarette is known to cause cancer. It is ironic that despite the fact that every smoker is aware of the ill effects of smoking, he does not give it up.

Tobacco companies are doing very well all over the world. Every packet of cigars or cigarettes has a warning inscribed in it: cigarette smoking is injurious to health." Yet the smoker never reads this warning and even if he reads it he never pays heed to it.

The government raises the price of tobacco every year. This is usually done to discourage people from smoking. Yet smokers continue to be slaves of this habit and often spend a substantial part of their earnings on cigarettes. Cigarette advertisements lure people into smoking and most active smokers cause a great deal of harm to passive smokers as well. Smokers force the members of their family to bear the ill effects of the smoke that they exhale. Smoking can be stopped by a strong will power and every person has the capacity to give it up once he sets his mind at doing so.
